Warm-up: some common errors

Small group work: sequencing a set of covers of children’s books across history to the present day, then matching them to specific dates on a timeline.

Lecture on the history of children’s books, with a special focus on the importance of Aesop’s Fables, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and the revolution of the Gutenberg press. How children’s books have come full circle from teaching manners and good behaviour to teaching how to behave in the time of Covid-19.

HOMEWORK: Reading ahead: The House at Pooh Corner and A Bear Called Paddington

Capital letters. An interview with American Indian author Sherman Alexie.

Feedback given on students' stories based on a picture. 

Capitalization rules.
Brief reference to the texts read at home: "7 English words you'd never guess have American Indian roots" and state names that are American Indian words (pp.35-40).
Watching an interview with American Indian author Sherman Alexie and discussing Alexie's views on being a Native American and growing up on a reservation (to be continued next lesson).
HOMEWORK: do the grammar exercises sent by email (Relative pronouns and relative clauses; simple past vs present perfect; simple past vs past perfect). The answer will be checked next class.

Speaking about the painting "Modern Times" by Native American artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith which addresses the difficulty of living in two worlds and not feeling comfortable in either.

Class discussion about the concept of Drag Queen Story Hour. Small group discussion of questions about the video of Mama G that students had watched for homework. Images and videos of drag queens crossing various lines when reading to children, followed by small-group discussions of questions and class feedback.
