We finished ST1 and then looked at the conventions of a cover letter and focused on some of the more technical terminology in finance/economics. The strategy we adopted was localization.

We looked at a business/economics text that looked at how McDonald's make its comeback.

Given the dominant position of English-speaking economies and the status of English as a lingua franca, students were also asked to answer the following questions prior to our review of the translation.

a) Do you believe this translation should make use of borrowing or loaning from English?

b) Business or economic terminology often makes use of metaphorization or neologisms. Does this specific text provide any examples? Can you maintain this creative language use in your translation?

c) Is there any vagueness or lexical or structural ambiguity in the text that you feel a need to clarify?

Practical 9

We reviewed Practical 9 focusing on coming up with an idiomatic translation where the target text reflects the exact message of the source text in a manner that is naturally expressed in the target language. Much like film subtitles, the intention was to produce a TT for silent reading.

Practical 8 concluded

We concluded reviewing students' translation of Practical 8. We then looked at Practical 9 (the script for a videogame) and looked at the video/read over the script and did a pre-translation analysis discussing some of the difficulties presented in the text.

TEST

Students did the test for continuous assessment. They were asked to translate an excerpt and do a commentary that included a brief ST analysis and the specific translation strategies used.
