Practical 2 reviewed

7 Fevereiro 2023, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

We started reviewing Practical 2 by looking first at the text analysis that was asked of students followed by a discussion of the general strategy adopted for this short story. We then began looking at the actual text and discussed some ways to improve some of the translations we saw.

Genesis 11, v. 1-9 (an intralingual and interlingual translation)

27 Janeiro 2023, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Began class by discussing what it is translators do as I focused on strategic decisions and decisions of detail. We then talked about Jakobson's intralingual tranlsation and discussed gist translation, exegetic translation and ideal rephrasing. We read Genesis 11, v. 1-9 and students were asked to do an intralingual + interlingual translation in groups.
The practical assignment included the following:

i)               Before starting the translation, read the entire ST and discuss some of the features (topic, lexis, style, register, extra contextual references needing further research) that may pose as potential challenges. As you read the ST focus on comprehension and situating the content and context. Also ask yourself what possible/diverging interpretations there may be.

ii)             Recast the story in different words, i.e. do an intralingual translation by adapting it for a specific purpose and a specific public (i.e. a specific readership or audience).

iii)            Explain the main decisions of detail you took in making the textual changes, and the reasons for these alterations. (Insert into your TT a superscript note-number after each expression you intend to discuss).

iv)            Now give me a Portuguese version of your translation. As you read your Portuguese translation check the following:

a.      Are there any unnecessary omissions?

b.     Has the message been transferred accurately?

c.      Have all the translation queries been dealt with?

d.     Does the translation read like a piece of original writing in the TL?
