Students were asked to translate the script from the video game Until Dawn. For this specific oral ST, I asked them to come up with an idiomatic translation where the target text reflects the exact message of the source text in a manner that is naturally expressed in the target language. They had to discuss the strategic decisions they had to take in so doing and remember that much like film subtitles, their intention was to produce a TT for silent reading. We looked at the video where the script was taken from and then students started working on the translation in pairs/groups.
Chesterman’s strategies

We reviewed Chesterman's translation strategies (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic). We looked at their classification/definition and looked at examples. Students were given several sentences from different newspaper articles (business material and world politics) and were then asked to translate them using specific strategies – giving them extra practice.
Practical 7 – ST4

Students had to translate two texts into Portuguese to appear in a recipe book to be published in a Portuguese-speaking country. They had to explain the main decisions of detail they made in producing the TT. The focus was on trying to find equivalents for ingredients that didn’t exist in the Portuguese market, thus making a slight adaptation. We also focused on measurements and their exact correspondence.
Practical 7 - ST3

Students
had to translate an instruction manual about batteries. They were asked to discuss
the strategic decisions confronting the translator and define a strategy for
translating it. They also had to explain the main decisions of detail made in
producing the TT.
Consumer oriented texts - ST2

We looked at three restaurant reviews. We focused on the general strategy students should have used to keep the texts informal but also maintain the tone. We also tried to adapt in order to make the translation more appealing and convincing as opposed to keeping the sentence structure of the ST.
