We reviewed the previous assignment
(Practical 1) by looking at some of the students intralingual and interlingual translations.
We then covered Newmark's translation methods (general strategies) and
translation procedures (specific ones). We didn’t have time to start Practical
2 and so this was assigned for homework along with the reading of Chapters 5
and 8 of Newmark’s book.

Students received and reviewed the syllabus, including course requirements
and assessment.
I reviewed the individual translation project and
also looked at the template with students. There was an introduction to some
translation strategies that included gist translation, exegetic translation and
ideal rephrasing. Also reviewed Jakobson's translation types and students were
asked to do an interlingual and intralingual translation of the first nine
verses from Genesis 11. Students were asked to discuss some of the
features (topic, lexis, style, register, extra contextual references needing
further research) that may pose as potential challenges. As they prepared
the intralingual translation in groups they were also asked to adapt it
for a specific purpose and a specific public (i.e. a specific readership or
audience). Students were asked to finish the assignment at home.
