We continued working on the book chapter focusing mostly on the dialogues (reviewing Portuguese punctuation) and maintaining some of the heterolinguistic aspects of the source text.

Students were asked to start working on Practical 4 which is a book chapter with some features of heterolingualism or linguistic multiplicity. They were asked how these specific features are going to influence the general strategy they will adopt in their translation. They were also asked to say which effects the author sought by intertwining both English and Portuguese in the ST. They have to decide if they’re going to maintain, erase or try to compensate the linguistic diversity in the translation.

Practical 3 - reviewed

The entire class was spent reviewing practical 3. We looked at students' difficulties and focused on some of the culture bound terms and how to translate them. We also focused on the stylistic particularities and how to maintain them.

We reviewed Hervey and Higgins' cultural transposition and focused on their strategies for the translation of culture bound terms. We also reviewed a pre-translation analysis table (based on Nord's TOSTA model) and focused on some of the questions students should ask before starting a detailed translation. We read the excerpt of the short story in Practical 3 and students were asked to answer some questions based on the table covered. The students started the translation in class and were then asked to finish the assignment for homework. 

Practical 2

We spent the entire class reviewing students' translations of Practical 2. Our main goal was to try and adapt the text so that it was in tune with the general translation strategy adopted. We also corrected some imprecisions related to grammar and lexical choice.
