Students had the written test which was worth 40% of their final grade. Students were asked to do a brief ST analysis followed by the translation of an excerpt where they also used and then justified their use of several translation strategies in a commentary (both general and specific).

We continued our revision of the translation focusing on some of the more cultural specificities and looking at possibilities in how to translate them. The attempt was to make the translation as appealing to the reader as the source text. 

Practical 7 - Consumer-oriented texts related to leisure activities - ST1

In this assignment students were asked to translate a Boston travel guide. Before starting their translation, they were asked to look at other travel guides in order to have an idea of the typical content, style and terminology. They were then asked to discuss the strategic decisions they took before starting a detailed translation of the ST. They also had to outline and justify the strategy or strategies they adopted as they translated the text into Portuguese.

Practical 6 - ST3

Students were asked to translate specific sections of a contraction into for a Portuguese publishing house. They were reminded that the translator’s objective was to convey as clearly as possible any of the concepts in question, so that they are both accurate and understandable to the target readership, which may be specialized, lay or both. They were asked to adopt language that is in current use. 

Practical 6 - ST2

HERE-, THERE-, AND WHERE- WORDS are used in normative texts, i.e. codes of law, contracts, constitutions, wills, etc. They define rights and duties and possible consequences in the case of a breach of a norm. Their use, however, should be avoided because they are ambiguous, confusing or even archaic.  As these words are often deemed unnecessary, they are simply ignored or omitted in translation. Students were asked to translate a series of sentences/phrases into Portuguese where they had to focus on how these specific words should be translated.
