We looked at the general strategies and procedures discussed by Vinay and Darbelnet, focusing on some examples so that students could see how the strategies can be applied. They were then asked to identify the use of further strategies in ST2 of practical 6.

Practical 6 - Legal translation - ST1

27 Fevereiro 2024, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Students had to read the excerpt of a contract and discuss any problems encountered in the tenancy agreement. They were asked to pay particular attention to lexis and register and state some of the striking features in the ST. Then they discussed the strategic decisions they had to take before starting a detailed translation of the ST. As they were asked to translate the ST into Portuguese for a law firm it was also stated that the English and Portuguese texts will be printed alongside one another throughout the contract. Therefore, articles and paragraphs should be numbered identically in the ST and TT. As requested by the law firm the translator’s objective is to convey as clearly as possible any of the concepts in question, so that they are both accurate and understandable to the target readership, which may be specialized, lay or both.

Practical 5 - Part II

23 Fevereiro 2024, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

There was a brief discussion on the different strategies of foreignization and domestication (F. Schleiermacher and L. Venuti). Students were asked to adopt one of these strategies into the remainder of their translation and there was a discussion on the effect this had on the reader.

Practical 5 - a graphic novel

20 Fevereiro 2024, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

We reviewed the first half of chapter one of the graphic novel (Maus). The focus was on some of the specific cultural references and maintaining the language simple. As the English was marked by faulty syntax or fragmented sentences, the goal was to reproduce this in Portuguese while trying to communicate the message clearly.
