- Examining the multiple layers of meaning in images
- Discussion of the changing social and cultural roles of photography.
- Examining image icons and discussing the historical and social context from which they emerged and gained meaning.
For next class:
1. Read “The Portrait in Photography”, pp. 101-121.
2. Select two or three portraits that illustrate the characteristics of portraiture discussed in the chapter.
3. Illustrate the difference between portrait painting and the photographic portrait.
4. Find similarities in the way specific artists (e.g. Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar) portray their subjects.
5. Compare the approach/aesthetic of two or more photographers mentioned in the chapter (e.g. Bill Brandt, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Alfred Stieglitz).
