Research Essay Guidelines + "The Identity Club"

13 Novembro 2024, 12:30 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

In this session, students reviewed the Research Essay Guidelines for an academic analysis of Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake. The essay will focus on exploring a theme, character, or specific aspect of the novel, requiring a well-defined thesis supported by textual evidence and external scholarly sources. Students were reminded to adhere to formatting standards, including MLA citations, and to use at least five reliable sources from databases like JSTOR or Google Scholar. Emphasis was placed on originality, analytical depth, and the inclusion of a clear conclusion that ties back to the thesis.  Students were also reminded to meet the submission deadline of December 9th, with penalties for late submissions.

We also looked at some discussion questions for “The Identity Club” by Richard Burgin. The questions explored themes such as society’s obsession with identity, loneliness, alienation, and mortality, as well as the psychological and social dynamics of exclusive clubs. Students reflected on the nature of identity, personal aspirations, and the story's genre, fostering critical thinking.
