Boys Go to Jupiter
30 Setembro 2024, 12:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
In today's class, we discussed the short story "Boys Go to Jupiter", which had been assigned for homework. We explored several main themes, including racism and the significance of symbols or images that can be denounced as racist. Our discussion also covered the protagonist Claire's personal trauma and how she processes it, as well as her guilt and detachment from historical events. Additionally, we examined themes of privilege and ignorance, highlighting Claire's initial obliviousness to the implications of her actions. We talked about grief and loss, particularly the deaths of Claire's mother and friend, and how these losses affect her behavior. The theme of identity and self-discovery was also discussed, focusing on how Claire's journey should involve significant self-reflection. We looked at the consequences of Claire's actions and the importance of accountability. Finally, we touched on the potential for redemption and forgiveness, both from others and herself, as Claire navigates the fallout from her insensitive behavior. As an oprtional homework assignment, students were asked to write a short essay on whether they believe we will ever reach a post-racial society.
