Mary and Max / Little Brother

18 Dezembro 2024, 12:30 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

In today’s class, we analyzed the main themes of the movie Mary and Max. We discussed the central theme of friendship, focusing on the deep bond between Mary and Max despite their differences. Other themes included loneliness and isolation, as both characters experience profound solitude, and mental health, particularly Max's struggles with Asperger's Syndrome and anxiety. We explored the importance of acceptance and understanding, noting how both characters learn to embrace themselves and each other. The portrayal of bullying and prejudice was examined through their experiences, along with the complexities of family and relationships and their impact on the characters. Lastly, we discussed empathy, compassion, and overcoming adversity, highlighting how Mary and Max find strength and support in their friendship.

We then read and discussed Bruce Holland Rogers’ short story “Little Brother.” The discussion focused on themes such as consumerism during Christmas, the relationships between the mother and son, and between the son and the little brother. We also analyzed some of the techniques used to create irony, examining how these elements contribute to the story's deeper message.
