The Lottery
9 Dezembro 2024, 12:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
Today, we listened to Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and engaged in a discussion exploring its themes, setting, and portrayal of characters. We began by analyzing the title and its use of irony, reflecting on how the story subverts expectations with its shocking conclusion. Our discussion focused on key themes such as the blind adherence to tradition and the morality of rituals, connecting these to the post-World War II era in which the story was written. This historical context helped us explore the critique of societal conformity and the dangers of unquestioned authority, themes that resonate universally. We also examined the portrayal of the setting—a seemingly idyllic village—and how it contrasts with the violent ritual at the heart of the story. This led to a discussion on the role of women, particularly their subservient and complicit roles within the societal framework, and how gender dynamics contribute to the story’s tension. Finally, we connected these ideas to contemporary contexts, including modern-day Portugal, discussing whether similar pressures to conform or uphold outdated traditions exist today. Through these discussions, students deepened their understanding of how literature reflects and critiques society across time and culture. |
