The Namesake
6 Novembro 2024, 12:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
In today's class, we discussed the main themes in The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. We explored the significance of identity and names, focusing on Gogol's struggle with his unusual name and its impact on his cultural and personal identity. We examined the challenges of cultural assimilation faced by the Ganguli family, highlighting the experiences of second-generation immigrants balancing dual identities. The theme of family and relationships was analyzed, particularly the bond between parents and children and the influence of cultural expectations. We also discussed the tension between tradition and modernity, as characters navigate preserving traditional values while adapting to modern American life. Gogol's search for belonging was a key point, as he tries to find his place within his family, cultural community, and society. Finally, we looked at the different perspectives on love and marriage, contrasting arranged marriages with romantic relationships and exploring the influence of cultural backgrounds on these unions.
