The role of central events in narrative fiction

24 Maio 2017, 16:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Students have to submit their final narrative texts on Monday 29th November. They started to work concretely on their narrative text for submission in Monday 22nd's class. I discussed structures and presentation with students individually as requested for this ongoing work.

In the meantime we watched John Carney's movie Begin Again. The central theme of this film is "can a song/art save your life?" feeding into the director/script writers own experience as a musician but also as an individual who has dealt with alcoholism and depression most of his adult life. We discussed how the central theme is presented and how ficionalisation of a theme/event can be enriched by personal experience, bu from moving awayt that the story told does not have to follow all the events of the individual life - in fact gains by moving away from rea. l life and allowing the fictional characters to deal with the events in their own way
