Continued work with Descriptive Texts

Discussion of how descriptive texts fit into fictional narratives.

Fictional texts are made up of characters and locations that unravel events.

Students had brought an object or subject to class that they could base their descriptive text on. I asked them to think of the event, characters and location where their descriptive text would take place. While the event will not need to be elaborated on or resolved in the descriptive text, it will be the driving force behind it because it will inform it.

If the subject of their descriptive text was a real person/people they would have to create a new character with a different name. They could now place characteristics on this character.

Once they had done this,  I asked them to write 15 seperate sentences or phrases - where they explored:
1. physical characteristics
2. emotional characteristics
3. relationship with the object
4.other

I then asked students to use these ideas to write an introductory paragraph to their text.

We looked at various examples -including the highly visual descriptive story A Hanging by George Orwell (1931) and discussion of its features - how it first presents the location, then the characters etc and how reading it one "sees" a story unfold. Students can read this text if they wish at  http://orwell.ru/library/articles/hanging/english/e_hanging

We also watched the section from James Runcie's documentary "A Year in the Life" (2007) where J.K.Rowling talks about her depression and the transformation of her feelings at this time into the description of characters, the Dementors.

I then asked students to produce a single word prompt to describe their subject and they free wrote to this for 5 minutes to firther explore personal connections to the subject.
These ideas could be added to the descriptive text.
Students will complete their descriptive texts for Monday 15th May and bring them to class so that they can perfect the use of adjectives for final submission on Weds 17th May.
