Discussion of texts on novels & CPE Use of English Practice Exercises

Reading and discussion of the reviews and articles on the set novels (pp 6-9 manual). Many of the students selected the novel they will read for the semester.

Discussion of some unique traditions in English speaking countries (hurling & gaelic football in Ireland).

Review of grammatical issues often faced by students at this level - inversion following adverbial expressions (not only etc) or when inversion is used instead of conditional tenses (manual pp 29-32) as well as word formation CPE exercises (p 39).

Students have to do a "Key Word Transformation" exercise (p 40) for next class.

Being through Words: Emanuel Melo and Avelina de Silveira

We continued working with Melo's essay Being through words and we discussed the necessity that language plays in building an identity. We spoke about its mobility and performativity. We discussed the difficulty of living between languages and red de Silveira's poem "Palavras onde me Perco". We pondered possible ways of translating the poem.
