Introduction to summary writing and practice

Introduction to summary writing - how to do it and how to prepare for it.
Then we did a dramatic reading of James Thurber's short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" .
I illustrated to the students how they should begin their presentation of the short story, they write a "thesis line" to describe the main point of the story. Then they reviewed each paragraph to see what each one added to this central idea.
Students will prepare a 200-word summary of this short story to bring to class next Weds.
We also discussed the oral presentations and I demonstrated to the students how they should prepare their abstracts. These must be submitted on 25th November.
Free writing

Students experiment with the tool of free writing. We discuss the psychological implications of free writing and its usefulness in dealing with the writer's block.
