Covid-19 - Tasks below.

12 Março 2020, 14:00 Maria Teresa Correia Casal

Info also sent by e-mail:

In line with the instructions received from the Dean, we will adapt the course plan of B2.1 to the current circumstances.
Within the next couple of weeks, you will be receiving feedback on your final versions of the argumentative essay (on the topic of "Growing up") and of your personal essay (on the topic of "Fear"). When we meet again, you will receive feedback on the test you wrote last Tuesday, 10 March.
In the meantime, your task until 26 March is to  work on your oral presentations. At the moment, we cannot say whether there will be time for you to present them as "oral presentations" later in the semester, so my suggestion is that you work on them in written form. Your two tasks for this period are therefore:
  1. Choose a topic (see instructions on pages 7-8 in your booklet) and submit your proposal by Tuesday, 17 March; You will then receive feedback by Thursday, 19 March;
  2. Send in a first draft of your script by 26 March.
Further instructions / suggestions:
  • The topics are deliberately broad so that you can adapt them to your interests; you may choose to approach a given topic from a more general / abstract point of view (i.e. in the form of an argumentative essay) or in a more particular way, using a personal incident, a story, a film, or interviews with family or friends as your starting point (thus adopting the format of a personal essay);
  • check the guidelines on How to Write an Argumentative Essay (pp. 64-67 in your booklet) and How to Write a Personal Essay (p. 68); they will be useful even when presenting your views orally and will definitely be useful when preparing your written draft;
  •  feel free to be creative in your writing and in your use of other media such as video, if you so wish.
Should you have any queries, please let me know.

 The first Writing Test will be held, as scheduled, on Monday 23rd March. This test is now worth 10% of your final grade. The second Writing Test is now worth 40% of your final grade.

 The test will be done at home during class hours (10:00-12:00).

 You will be sent the test by email 5 minutes before the test is due to start. Please make sure that you are prepared and ready to start at the appointed time, as above indicated.

 You have two hours to do the test, as usual.

 You must send your answers by email (saved as a Word file) 15 minutes after 12:00, at the latest.

 Tests submitted later than the appointed time (i.e. 12:15) shall not be marked, and the student will get a zero out of 20.
