5-minute Oxford-style debates (III)
- This House believes all lives matter (motion fell)
- This House believes romance is dead (motion carried)
In preparation for this assignment, there are three texts you will need to read; they are: two short stories, "Curly Red" by Joyce Carol Oats" and "Experience" by Tessa Hadley, and the article "What if polluters footed the climate bill?" by Isabelle Gerretsen. As also mentioned, you will not need to write on all three of these texts but instead focus your essay on only one of them. Therefore, it is up to you to decide whether you read all of them or pick one and conduct research on the main moral dilemma or issue raised by the text.
N.B.: In this exercise you will need to follow the structures discussed in class (see here and here; you may also want to check examples 1 and 2) and employ a good vocabulary range that showcases your knowledge of the topic and/or text under discussion. You are also expected to employ adequate persuasive language means & techniques (see here, namely slides 7&9).
On Nov. 11 you must bring:
- A test sheet (or two);
- A pen (make sure it works).
You may also bring:
- A printed copy of the three texts;
- An English-English Dictionary;
- A blank sheet of paper.
