Introduction to techniques of so-called "technical" translating

Explanation, using examples from the anthology, of how texts can roughly (and artificially) be divided into categories; in this case my terms are "technical" and "stylistic". Analysis of some of the difficulties arising in translating "technical" texts between Portuguese and English.

Introduction to classes and explanation of aims etc.. Explanation that due to the number of students in the class it will be impossible to do regular practical work for correction outside of the classroom, and that a test paper during the semester would prove difficult to mark before the end of the semester, so that there will only be one written exercise at the end of the semester, meaning that presence and participation will -- for this semester at least -- be granted a quantifiable mark. The introduction page in the anthology of texts is as follows: 

1. Objetivos

Objetivos principais:

-       analisar textos de registos e estilos vários, discutindo abordagens diferentes em relação a traduções possíveis;

-       contrastar a escrita de textos destes estilos diferentes nas duas línguas; e

-       traduzir textos (principalmente de inglês par português)

 

2. Duração

Entre 50 e 60 horas de contacto.

 

3. Avaliação

- Trabalho regular de tradução nas aulas

- Um exercício escrito presencial baseado nos textos analisados e nas técnicas ensinadas nas aulas

- Participação nas aulas
