Modelling Literary Essay Writing - Second, One Must Plan

Today, TP9 learned how to plan a literary essay.  Students who missed today's lesson should go through the PowerPoint How to Write an Essay, which is located in the folder entitled 'Essay STuff'.

Homework: students must start reading the first story from Jhump Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, 'A Temporary Matter'.  Please note that doing the reading homework is very important as this is how you will learn to come up with thesis statements.

Next class: we will look at the final product, the writing, a small literary essay entitled Joyce Carol Oates’s ‘Small Avalanches’:How a Bad Girl Plays It Safe.

TYPES AND THEORIES OF COMEDY

Presentation of various types of comedy, with examples.

Small group discussion about what makes something funny. Feedback to the class.

Presentation of three theories of comedy – Incongruity; Superiority; Relief – with video examples.

Modelling Literary Essay Writing - First One Must Read

Today, TP9 read the first half of Joyce Carol Oates's short story 'Small Avalanches'.  This reading is essential so that we can continue to look at how to prepare for and write a literary essay. 

Homework: finish reading the short story which has been uploaded onto the shared Google drive (it's in the collection Small Avalanches and Other Stories).
