Showed students an example of an opinion essay - students did an exercise where they had to identify thesis sentence and supporting arguments. The thesis sentence was not always the first sentence in the paragraph and so we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the position of the thesis sentence in a paragraph - photocopies of this exercise are in the Red Copy shop.
More detailed discussion of paragraph structures in 2 position essays (e.g, for and against, here & there, then & now - see section in manual on this) and opinion essay.
Students to send opinion paragraph to email so that we can construct final essay in class next Monday.
Also students will select their Hopeless Life of Charlie Summers question next Monday
