5 Novembro 2025, 15:30 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Students were introduced to Practical 7, a text from the children’s literature genre. They were instructed to pay particular attention to the sound elements throughout the text and produce a translation that would remain appealing to children. Students were asked to apply a general translation method from Vinay and Darbelnet’s framework and justify their choice. Additional focus areas included maintaining the text’s oral quality, ensuring consistency throughout the translation, and preserving appropriate tone and register for the target audience.

Students completed the first continuous assessment test, which required them to perform a brief source text analysis, select an appropriate general translation approach using Newmark's framework, translate an assigned excerpt, and provide a commentary demonstrating the application of at least six translation procedures, choosing from Newmark or Vinay and Dalbernet. This assessment evaluated students’ ability to analyze, strategize, execute, and critically reflect on their translation choices.

Students’ translations of the Boston travel guide were reviewed with emphasis on the text’s key nuances including cultural adaptation, idiomatic and figurative language, historical and local references, register and tone, and proper names. The primary translation procedure expected was oblique translation, specifically employing modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. Throughout our revision, attention was given to ensuring students maintained the promotional effectiveness of the original text while making it accessible and engaging for Portuguese-speaking readers.
