The scheduled class session was cancelled to allow students to attend the university’s opening ceremony, which took place during the regular class time. All students were invited to participate in the ceremony.
Newmark’s Methods Applied in Literary Translation

This
session focused on reviewing the first part of students’ Practical 2,
specifically Tasks 1 and 3. The class discussion centered initially on
determining which of Newmark’s method(s) would be most suitable for translating
this particular text type and understanding the rationale behind these choices.
We then examined students’ translations to assess whether they had successfully
applied their chosen method(s) and identified necessary modifications to ensure
compliance with their stated approach.

The class
began with a comprehensive review of students’ in-depth analyses of the
VisitScotland website using the template provided, which was based on Nord’s
TOSTA model. Particular attention was given to translating specific cultural
aspects, as these elements proved somewhat challenging for students. Following
this discussion, I introduced Practical 2, which requires students to translate
Simon Rich’s short story “Animals” into Portuguese while applying Newmark’s
translation methods. After reading through portions of the story together,
students were divided into groups to collaborate on developing a general
translation strategy. The remainder of the class was devoted to group work,
allowing students to begin their translations.

Applying Nord’s TOSTA Model to Source Text Analysis

We
reviewed students’ Shakespeare translations, focusing on how their work
differed depending on the method applied. Comparisons were made between
faithful and semantic translation, and then contrasted with communicative
translation. We then turned to Nord’s TOSTA model, briefly discussing the
extratextual and intratextual factors she outlines, as well as the skopos or
purpose of translations and how this shapes the method chosen by the
translator. I introduced a table/template for in-depth source text analysis,
which students will now be expected to use for practical exercises. For this
session’s exercise, students worked with an excerpt from the VisitScotland
website (focusing on the Highlands). They read the text, explored the website,
and began collaborating on the ST analysis using the template. We will review
their work in the next class.
