Cultural Adaptation in Consumer Texts and Introduction to Translating the Boston Travel Guide
27 Outubro 2025, 15:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
We reviewed students’ translations of the restaurant reviews, discussing various options to enhance naturalness and appeal for a Portuguese audience. I then introduced Practical 6, a consumer-oriented travel guide to Boston, where students are required to outline and justify their chosen general translation method (direct or oblique approach). They must discuss potential translation challenges, considering cultural adaptation, stylistic differences, and genre-specific features, while identifying key aspects requiring special attention—such as idiomatic expressions, persuasive techniques, and descriptive language. As part of their translation, students will apply at least six procedures from Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995), justifying each choice with reference to genre conventions, cultural considerations, and impact on the target audience.

Direct vs. Oblique Translation: Vinay and Darbelnet’s Framework

We examined Vinay and Darbelnet’s approach to translation, exploring the distinction between direct and oblique translation methods along with their associated procedures. After reviewing key concepts and analyzing examples of their application in Portuguese, students began Practical 5, which centers on restaurant reviews. They were asked to apply these procedures strategically while preparing a short commentary addressing translation difficulties such as culinary and cultural terminology, specific references, and metaphorical or playful language.

Translation Methods: Applying Newmark to Business Discourse
20 Outubro 2025, 15:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
We reviewed the first part of Practical 4, which involved translating “How the Best Bosses Interrupt Bias on Their Teams” into Portuguese using Peter Newmark’s translation methods and procedures. Students were instructed to maintain the professional register appropriate for a business management publication while preserving the article’s structure, including headings, subheadings, and formatting. The session focused on identifying 5-7 significant translation problems students encountered, with particular attention to explaining which Newmark procedures were applied to resolve these challenges.
