Students discussed some of the text’s
basic features. In their analysis they had to think about structure, language
(lexis/register) and potential translation challenges and suggest suitable
strategies to address them.
They had to translate the ST into Portuguese for a car
magazine. Their aim was to comply with the conventions of news writing.

Asked students to read the source text and state what its main purpose is: informative, operative, or persuasive? They then had to discuss the strategic decisions confronting the translator and define their own strategy for translating it, keeping in mind the following questions: a. Given the dominant position of English-speaking economies and the status of English as a lingua franca, do you believe this translation should make use of borrowing or loaning from English? b. Business or economic terminology often makes use of metaphorization or neologisms. Does this specific text provide any examples? Can you maintain this creative language use in your translation? c. Is there any vagueness or lexical or structural ambiguity in the text that you feel a need to clarify?
