We began by
examining students' translations, focusing on the first couple of paragraphs of
Practical 3, and identifying the general strategies they applied. To compare
these strategies, we considered how the text would appear using different
approaches. Our main focus was on communicative/semantic and faithful
strategies. The communicative approach aimed to maintain the message in modern
Portuguese, making it easily understandable for the target audience. In
contrast, the faithful strategy prioritized maintaining a formal and literal
register, respecting the author's style. Additionally, we explored the
application of some of Newmark’s specific strategies, such as naturalization,
cultural equivalent, and modulation.

In today’s class, we examined Peter Newmark’s translation procedures, which encompass specific strategies for addressing translation challenges. Just to name a few of the strategies we discussed, these included: transference, which involves carrying over words directly from the source language, particularly when dealing with cultural terms; modulation, which changes the point of view to better fit the target language; and paraphrase, used when a more detailed explanation is required due to linguistic or cultural differences. After explaining these and all the other strategies mentioned by Newmark and providing examples for each, I assigned Practical 3. This task involves translating the opening pages of chapter 1 from the Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto into Portuguese, applying both Newmark’s general and specific strategies. Students were asked to work on this translation in groups, and the assignment will be reviewed during next Monday’s class.

Bible homework and Newmark's general translation methods

In today’s class, we thoroughly reviewed the homework assignments, paying special attention to how students approached both intralingual and interlingual translations of the selected Bible excerpts. We discussed the challenges they encountered and how they applied different strategies to manage these translation issues. After completing the homework review, we explored Peter Newmark’s general translation methods, focusing on strategies that demonstrate a bias toward either the Source Language (SL) or the Target Language (TL). We discussed examples of translations that reflect SL bias, where the translation remains closely aligned with the structure and meaning of the original text, as well as examples of TL bias, where the translation is more concerned with fluency and naturalness in the target language. These examples helped to illustrate the practical applications of Newmark’s theories in translation work.
