Practical 10

2 Dezembro 2024, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

In today’s class, students worked on translating the script from the video game Until Dawn into Portuguese. The goal was to create an idiomatic translation that conveyed the exact meaning of the source text (ST) while ensuring the target text (TT) felt natural and fluent. Students were reminded to:

  • Craft the dialogue for silent reading, prioritizing clarity, conciseness, and readability, akin to film subtitles.
  • Translate scene descriptions with attention to specific lexis commonly found in film, providing visual context.

To support the process, students watched a video from the game, which served as a shared reference for understanding tone, character voice, and scene dynamics. Afterward, they began translating the material in groups or pairs to encourage collaboration.

Translation Task Components

  1. Translation: Students worked on adapting idioms, slang, and cultural references to resonate with Portuguese speakers, while preserving the tone, voice, and emotional nuances of the original script.
  2. Analysis: Students reflected on their decisions, particularly how they balanced faithfulness to the ST with creating a natural and engaging TT.
  3. Commentary: Students noted the strategies they employed, challenges they faced, and solutions they developed during the translation process.
The class emphasized both the technical and creative aspects of translation, fostering critical thinking and collaboration.

Image descriptions and Practical 9

27 Novembro 2024, 14:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

We began by reviewing the assignment from the previous class, which involved translating image descriptions into Portuguese while applying Chesterman’s strategies. Next, we worked on Practical 9, focusing on accuracy and precision in the context of a Tenancy at Will agreement. Particular attention was given to maintaining the text’s register, as some students had oversimplified this aspect in their translations. We concluded by reviewing the first section of the contract in detail and addressing key problem areas throughout the remainder of the document

Chesterman's translation strategies

25 Novembro 2024, 14:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

In this class, we focused on Chesterman’s translation strategies, particularly local and production strategies, which include syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic approaches. We defined each strategy in terms of manipulating form, meaning, or message. As we discussed each strategy, we reviewed several examples (English-to-Portuguese translations) to illustrate their practical application. I then showed two images, each accompanied by a detailed description. Students worked in pairs to translate the descriptions into Portuguese, using at least five of Chesterman’s strategies in their translations.
