Practical 9 - Tenancy at Will

20 Novembro 2024, 14:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

In today’s class, students worked on Practical 9, which focused on a Tenancy at Will. The session began with a text analysis aimed at identifying linguistic and cultural challenges in the source text. Students examined specialized legal terminology (lexis) and the formal, precise style of legal agreements (register). They also noted common features such as repeated phrases, fixed expressions, and culturally specific references, which needed to be addressed for clarity and contextual accuracy.

Next, students developed a translation strategy, focusing on these key aspects: legal equivalence, ensuring terms and clauses were adapted to align with Portuguese tenancy laws while preserving their original intent; consistency, maintaining uniform terminology and formatting throughout the document; and addressing cultural adaptations where needed.

Finally, students began the translation task, working to clearly and accurately convey legal concepts so that the text would be accessible to both legal professionals and lay readers.

Test

13 Novembro 2024, 14:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Students completed a continuous assessment test consisting of two main components: the translation of an excerpt into Portuguese and a detailed commentary. The commentary involved analyzing the source text (ST) and justifying the use of specific translation strategies to address challenges within the ST. This assessment aimed to evaluate students' ability to translate a text into Portuguese, perform a pre-translation analysis, and apply appropriate translation strategies effectively.
