Test

13 Novembro 2024, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Students completed a continuous assessment test consisting of two main components: the translation of an excerpt into Portuguese and a detailed commentary. The commentary involved analyzing the source text (ST) and justifying the use of specific translation strategies to address challenges within the ST. This assessment aimed to evaluate students' ability to translate a text into Portuguese, perform a pre-translation analysis, and apply appropriate translation strategies effectively.

Practical 8

We reviewed the test structure for Wednesday, ensuring students knew what to expect. We then read Practical 8, a consumer-oriented text based on three recipes, and analyzed its key features. The discussion focused on purpose, audience, and structure, guided by questions such as:

  • Who is the recipe intended for, and how does this affect language and tone? (Is it for beginners or experienced cooks?)
  • How are the instructions organized? Are the steps concise and logically ordered?
  • Are there any ingredients or techniques that may be unfamiliar or need adaptation for a Portuguese-speaking audience?
  • Does the tone align with common styles found in Portuguese recipes?

Next, students worked in groups to start their translations into Portuguese, considering specific strategies and addressing questions like:

  • Did you adapt any ingredients or techniques?
  • Did you condense or expand instructions for clarity?
  • Did you compensate for any translation loss? If so, how?
