Discussed some of the translation methods proposed by Newmark including, interlineal, literal, faithful, balanced, idiomizing and free translation. Students then did a practical exercise where they had to translate proverbs and sentences into Portuguese using one of the previously mentioned methods. Discussion on their translations ensued.

Reviewed with students their intralingual translation of Genesis 11 v 1 - 9. Focused on gist translation, exegetic translation and ideal rephrasing while keeping in mind their target audience. 
Discussed how to achieve an ideal translation by looking at SL bias and TL bias. The discussion was based on different translation methods such as: interlineal, literal, faithful, balanced, idiomizing and free translation. 

Syllabus and Translation Process

Reviewed the syllabus with the students, including objectives and assessment criteria.
Looked at the translation process involved in intralingual translation. Students started Practical 1 - excerpt from Genesis on the Tower of Babel.
