MANDATORY CLASS - debating teams

Today, TP10 selected their debating motions (and came up with some of their own), got into teams and chose their dates for their debates.  The motions, teams, debates are as follows:


  • Motion: The sex industry contributes to the objectification of women’s bodies; Team A: Diogo Loureiro, Renata Saraivo, Inês Eusébio. Team B: Jade Oliveira, Beatriz Tampinho, Cíntia Santos; Date: 20th March. 
  • Motion: Tuition fees should be banned – students are entitled to free university education; Team A: Vasco Monteiro, Samira Luca, Teodora Crisan; Team B: Mariana Raminhos, Yifei Chen, Jéssica Fidalgo; Date: 22nd March.
  • Motion:Cancel Culture is a threat to freedom of speech; Team A: João Pereira, Daniela Marques, Nelson Diaz. Team B: Carolina Vitorino, Rute Nangurá, Lia Andrade; Date:  27th March.
  • Motion: Religion does more harm than good; Team A: Henrique Andrade, Margarida Nazário, Bernardo Ribeiro. Team B: Eduardo Ansiães, Ana Vanessa Saianda, Mariana Abreu; Date:  27th March at 18h30.

Family Romance, LLC

Reading and discussion of an article from the New Yorker that looked at a Japanese company called Family Romance, LLC, that allows you to hire relatives or friends. We also saw a brief commentary about the documentary by Werner Herzog that discussed finding truth in artificiality. Our discussion then looked at other apps and websites around the world that also provide this type of service.

Oxford Union Debate - Islam is a religion of peace

Today we continued to watch (and learn from) one of the Oxford Union Debates that was recorded and uploaded onto YouTube.

It is imperative that all students who missed the class watch the last four sections of the debate that we watched in class today, as this serves as a model for the debates that students will be carrying out for their oral exams.
