Newmark's Translation Methods and Procedures

We reviewed Newmark's general translation methods based on SL bias and TL bias. These included interlineal translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, communicative translation, idiomatic translation, free translation and adaptation.

We then looked at some of the specific procedures/strategies he discusses such as: transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, componential analysis, synonymy, through-translation, shirts or transpositions, modulation, recognized translation, compensation, paraphrase, couplets and notes.
Students were given examples in order to better understand these strategies.

An Intralingual Translation

Reviewed Jakobson's "On Linguistic Aspects of Translation".
Students then were asked to do an intralingual translation of Genesis 11, v. 1-9 in pairs or groups. The practical assignment included the following:

i)               Before starting the translation, read the entire ST and discuss some of the features (topic, lexis, style, register, extra contextual references needing further research) that may pose as potential challenges. As you read the ST focus on comprehension and situating the content and context. Also ask yourself what possible/diverging interpretations there may be.

ii)             Recast the story in different words, i.e. do an intralingual translation by adapting it for a specific purpose and a specific public (i.e. a specific readership or audience).

iii)            Explain the main decisions of detail you took in making the textual changes, and the reasons for these alterations. (Insert into your TT a superscript note-number after each expression you intend to discuss).

iv)            Now give me a Portuguese version of your translation. As you read your Portuguese translation check the following:

a.      Are there any unnecessary omissions?

b.     Has the message been transferred accurately?

c.      Have all the translation queries been dealt with?

d.     Does the translation read like a piece of original writing in the TL?
