We finished reviewed ST1 from Practical 4 and started working on ST2 which were restaurant reviews. As a consumer oriented text we focused once again on making the translation persuasive and appealing to the target audience. Once again, we corrected some mistakes and focused on making that TT sound as natural as possible.

We reviewed the Boston guide, focusing on maintaining some of the texts features which were informative, involving and entertaining. Students were asked to explain how they tackled the translation of the cultural references while maintaining the style and register. We corrected some mistakes involving misinterpretation and looked at certain options to make the translation sound more natural.

Practical 4 - consumer oriented text

Students were
asked to read and start the translation of an extract for a travel magazine.
Before starting the translation, students were asked to look at Portuguese
travel magazines/guides in order to have an idea of the typical content, style
and terminology. As they thought about the text, they were asked to discuss the
strategic decisions and outline and justify the strategy or strategies they
were going to adopt in order to maintain equivalence. They were asked to keep
in mind that the text was informative, involving and entertaining and that the
translation should maintain these features.
