Practical 2 - a literary text
22 Setembro 2022, 14:00 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
We looked at a pre-translation analysis table as a guide to Nord's TOSTA model.
Students then read Practical 2 - an extract from the short story "The Semplica Girls".
Students were put into groups and asked to answer the following questions:
• What is the subject matter of the text? Does it require any use of culture-bound or technical terms?
• How is the text organized? Does it have long paragraphs, short paragraphs? Is the information organized coherently? Is there information included that will become redundant for the translator?
• How would you characterize the vocabulary? (is it colloquial?; are there collocations, idioms, or words chosen for particular effects?)
• What are the features of the sentence structure (mainly long or short sentences, simple or complex ones?
• How would you characterize the style?
Students were then asked to translate the text into Portuguese and state which main translation strategy was adopted and why,
Students had to finish the translation for homework and discuss the main difficulties they had and state how they were able to achieve “equivalence” or avoid “translation loss”.
