Practical 4 - a consumer oriented text

Students were asked to read and start the translation of an extract for a travel magazine. Before starting the translation, students were asked to look at Portuguese travel magazines/guides in order to have an idea of the typical content, style and terminology. As they thought about the text, they were asked to discuss the strategic decisions and outline and justify the strategy or strategies they were going to adopt in order to maintain equivalence. They were asked to keep in mind that the text was informative, involving and entertaining and that the translation should maintain these features.


Practical 3 - a legal text

We reviewed students' translation of Practical 3 - a tenancy at will.  

We focused on the translator's objective which was to convey as clearly as possible any of the concepts in question, so that they were both accurate and understandable to the target readership, which may be specialized, lay or both.  

Again, we focused on the correct usage of lexis and register and students had to outline the striking features in the ST ad students had to state which strategies were used. 

 

Practical 3 reviewed

We reviewed students' translation of Practical 3 - a tenancy at will.

Vinay and Darbelnet

We looked at Vinay and Darbelnet's translation solutions which divides translation into two main strategies: direct and oblique.  

We then looked at some of their specific translation procedures. We looked at their definition and use of 23 different strategies along with examples.  

We then looked at Practical 3 as students were asked to describe some of the major difficulties in this legal text.
