We continued our revision of ST1 and then focused on the translation of a cover letter in the financial area. We looked at some specifics of business correspondence and also financial terminology.

Students read a source text and stated its main purpose: informative, operative, or persuasive? They then had to discuss the strategic decisions confronting the translator and define their strategy. They had to keep in the mind the following questions: a. Given the dominant position of English-speaking economies and the status of English as a lingua franca, do you believe this translation should make use of borrowing or loaning from English? b. Business or economic terminology often makes use of metaphorization or neologisms. Does this specific text provide any examples? Can you maintain this creative language use in your translation? c. Is there any vagueness or lexical or structural ambiguity in the text that you feel a need to clarify?

We reviewed the first half of chapter one of the graphic novel (Maus). The focus was on some of the specific cultural references and maintaining the language simple. As the English was marked by faulty syntax or fragmented, the goal was to reproduce this in Portuguese while trying to communicate the message clearly.
