We reviewed Chesterman's translation strategies (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic). We looked at their classification/definition and looked at examples.

This practical involved the translation of an informative texts. Students had to read the source text and characterize some of its features. They were then asked to translate the source text into Portuguese and state which general strategy was used to maintain equivalence, keeping in mind that the text is informative, involving and entertaining. I also asked them to pay particular attention to some of the cultural references, but also take into consideration the style, register and rhetorical effect.

We looked at ST3 which was an article taken from the National Geographic and looked at handcrafts in Mexico. The aim was to make the translation as natural as possible for the target audience with a focus on how to translate some of the more cultural references.

We finished the revision of the translation focusing on making it as idiomatic as possible and “natural” for the target audience.
