Practical 3 - reviewed

We reviewed Hervey and Higgins' cultural
transposition and focused on their strategies for translating culture bound
terms. We then looked at most of Practical 3. We looked at the
first part of the assignment where students were asked to answer several
questions regarding the ST and then focused on some of the difficulties
regarding the cultural references, the author's quirky writing style, and the
students' strategies in trying to maintain the aesthetics.
Practical 4 - 1st part

We looked at an excerpt of a chapter from
a novel and discuss the strategic problems confronting the
translator due to the features of heterolingualism or linguistic multiplicity
in the text. Students had to answer the following questions: How are these
specific features of the ST going to influence the strategy you will adopt in
your translation? Also, which effects were sought by the writer in intertwining
both English and Portuguese in the original text? Are you going to maintain,
erase or attempt to “compensate” this linguistic diversity in your translation?
As we began our revision of the practical, we focused on making the TT as
natural as possible trying to avoid the “literal” strategy.

We spent most of class reviewing students' translations of Practical 2. Our main goal was to try and adapt the text so that it was in tune with the general translation strategy adopted. We also corrected some imprecisions related to grammar and lexical choice. We then looked at a Pre-Translation Analysis Table (based on Nord's Tosta model) and students were asked to use it for the ST analysis of Practical 3. We then read the excerpt of Practical 3 and the assigment was sent for homework.

We reviewed most of Practical 3.
