Sts were asked to read Roman Jakobson's On Linguistic Aspects of Translation, as it will be a mini-quiz based on the text on February 8.
Para uma história da teoria de tradução: Cícero e S. Jerónimo

Conclusão da análise do texto seminal de James S. Holmes.
Discussão de textos de dois autores centrais no pensamento (ocidental) sobre a tradução: excertos de De oratore (55 a.C.) e De finibus bonorum et malorum (44 a.C.), de Cícero, e excerto da Carta a Pamáquio sobre os problemas da tradução (395/396), de S. Jerónimo. Ambos os autores e também tradutores (o primeiro de filósofos e oradores gregos, o segundo da Vulgata) defendem a tradução livre, sendo a carta de S. Jerónimo fundadora da oposição binária entre tradução literal (palavra a palavra) e tradução livre (segundo o sentido). Iniciou-se a discussão comentando um quadro de Caravaggio (S. Jerónimo a escrever, 1605-1606); concluiu-se a aula contrastando esse quadro com uma representação também pictórica de outro tradutor da Bíblia, mas para língua vernácula, Martinho Lutero (pintura de Eugène Siberd, 1898).

Análise do texto “The name and nature of Translation Studies” (1972), de James S. Holmes, que consiste na primeira tentativa de mapeamento da disciplina de estudos de tradução e de respetiva institucionalização. Discussão, com base em exemplos ilustrativos, de cada ramo proposto para a organização da disciplina e respetivos subramos: Estudos Descritivos de Tradução (orientados para o produto, para a função e para o processo); Estudos Teóricos de Tradução (teorias gerais e parciais); Estudos Aplicados de Tradução (formação de tradutores, auxiliares de tradução, políticas de tradução e crítica de tradução).
