JUNE EXAM
The following instructions are for students who enrol to sit the exam in June.

TEST STRUCTURE

The test will consist of TWO critical essay questions, of which students choose ONE and write an essay of approximately 400-450 words. The essay will be based on the script and staged version of the play "Every Brilliant Thing" by Duncan Macmillan.

CRITERIA
Students will need to show knowledge of having read and seen both versions of the play. The essay will take the form of a critical essay and particular attention will be given to the degree of criticality, fluency, accuracy and the ability to objectively relate the question to the play

PROCEDURE
Students who enrol for the exam need to contact me by email (daniel.silva@campus.ul.pt)   AT LEAST 48 hours prior to the exam The exam is scheduled for   4 June at 2 p.m. Students who inform me in advance by email of their enrolment will receive the test on the above date and time and will have TWO hours to complete the exercise before returning it to me by email. Students who do not have access to the material used in our classes may contact me and I will send the respective texts and links . Anyone who requires further clarification may also contact me by email.

PLAGIARISM
Please note that students who refer to the work of other authors must include references of their sources. Any writing that has been paraphrased and is identified as the work of someone else will be cancelled if it is not duly referenced.

Presentation of format for June examinations and discussion of oral presentation grading and results

 Discussion of oral presentation grades and review of the semester. 

Procedures of the June examination: The June exam will be in two parts, a written examination at class time on Monday June 1st from 4.00-6.00 p.m. and an oral examination on Wednesday June 3rd from 4.00-6.00 p.m.

Procedures for the written examination: students will be sent a Zoom link the morning of the exam. They must log into the Zoom room with cameras turned on throughout the examination. Moreover, students who have not attended class regularly must show a photo ID with a recent photo so that I can verify student identification before the examination begins. Once, I have verified all candidates’ IDs I will send the written examination to students’ official email.

The written examination will have a duration of 90 minutes with 15 minutes tolerance. Students will submit their finished examination to my email cbeecher@campus.ul.pt. All written examinations will be run through a plagiarism software before correction – any examination that is identified as having plagiarised material will not be evaluated.

Procedures for the oral examination: students will be sent a Zoom link and the specific time slot of their oral examination on the morning of the examination.

The oral examination will have a duration of 15 minutes.

Structure of the examinations: the written examination will be divided into 2 parts: written exercise on specific forms of writing developed during the semester – narrative texts, descriptive texts, academic summaries and close reading of literary texts (50%), and an essay developed on the themes discussed in class using the set novels to support arguments (50%).

The oral examination will involve discussion of the set novels and theories presented.

Examination Instructions

Procedures of the June examination: The June exam will be in two parts, an oral examination at class time on Monday June 1st (preassigned 15m slots, from noon-2pm) and a written examination on Wednesday June 3rd from noon-2pm.

Students will have to do both examinations as they have equal weight.

 

Oral Examination

The oral examination will have a duration of 15 minutes.

The oral examination will involve a discussion of the set novel (Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World). Students will be expected to answer reflective questions in a critical, articulate and personal manner, and to discuss specific characters and events in the novel.

They must log into the Zoom room with cameras turned on throughout the examination. Moreover, students who have not attended class regularly must show a photo ID with a recent photo so that I can verify student identification before the examination begins.

 

Written Examination

Procedures for the written examination: students will be sent a Zoom link the morning of the exam. They must log into the Zoom room with cameras turned on throughout the examination. Once, I have verified all candidates’ IDs I will send the written examination to students’ official email.

The written examination will have a duration of 120 minutes with 5 minutes tolerance. Students will submit their finished examination to my email bpalmeirim@campus.ul.pt. All written examinations will be run through a plagiarism software before correction – any examination that is identified as having plagiarised material will not be evaluated and will be reported to Conselho Pedagógico.

Structure of the examinations: the written examination will be divided into 2 parts: 1) English language exercises (see SCB pp.80-101, worth 35%), and a Point-by-Point argumentative essay on Brave New World of about 500 words, as practiced during the semester (SCB 18-51; essay structure in SCB 41; worth 65%).

Oral presentations and final assessment

Students presented their oral work.

Feedback was provided on the Writing Paper.

Students were given their final assessment.


Exam date and structure

The exam will be held on 1st of June between 10:00h and 12:00h. Students will receive the exam and the answer sheet template at 10:00h by email. They will have to send the answer sheet to mcabrita1@campus.ul.pt at 12:00h.

Students are reminded that they must enroll for the exam with the Academic Services. Students are asked to email the teacher (mcabrita1@campus.ul.pt) by 29th May to say they will be sitting the exam on 1st of June.

The exam will focus on all materials from the S tudent's Workbook except for the two films "Secrets & Lies" and "Philomena", which were not discussed in class. 

The exam will  consist of two essay-writing exercises of 500 words each. Each essay will carry 10/20 points.
