Presentation of programme and evaluation criteria

We discussed the different elements of the programme and what would be expected of students at each point. We also discussed the different components of the evaluation system.
We then watched short videos where the authors of the set novels discussed their work and students discussed the themes of the novels. Students must choose their set novel this week, so I asked them to read the reviews in their manuals about the novels.
Programme
Students will participate in activities that facilitate the capacity to achieve the requisite level of fluency and accuracy for all four language skills at this level; to read, appraise and criticize texts of different kinds – literary, journalistic, philosophical, etc.; to have an understanding of appropriate register; to recognize and use a variety of idiomatic expressions as well as more complex syntactic constructions; to produce clear, coherent and cohesive written texts; to be able to discuss abstract/philosophical ideas. Specific tasks include:
Consolidation of advanced grammatical structures and essay writing techniques
Specific writing: summary writing and introduction to descriptive and narrative structures in literary writing
Exposure to resources in varied media
Reading and discussion of a set contemporary novel
Preparation of student led discussion on literary texts
A formal oral presentation of technical aspects or relevant content of the contemporary novel read during the semester.
EVALUATION:
As teaching will be task-based and interactive a system of continuous evaluation with specific moments of written and oral evaluation will be applied.
These will include:
Written Assignments 20%: one argumentative essay (10%) and either a 500-word summary of an academic article or a 500-600 word creative writing text (10%)
Oral Presentation based on set novel 20%
Attendance and Participation in set class activities – which must include prepared presentations of literary texts and/or research articles; close reading of literary texts; prepared discussant of oral presentations: 20%
Final Written Test: 40%
