Practical 6 – A Graphic Novel
21 Março 2025, 11:00 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
In this practical
session, we focused on the first chapter of Maus II: A Survivor's Tale
and explored its linguistic and translational challenges. Students began by
reading the chapter up to page 22, after which they were placed into groups to
discuss the provided analysis questions. Additionally, students were introduced
to Grimp and Krita and were asked to use these programs to format their
translations within the graphic novel panels while maintaining the integration
of text and visuals.
Refining Translation Choices in Practical 5
18 Março 2025, 15:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
In today’s class, we
continued revising students’ translations of Bad Seed, Act 2, Scene 2
(Practical 5), focusing on key aspects for an effective rendering into
Portuguese. We examined formality and social conventions, ensuring that the
translation avoided excessive colloquialisms and incorporated appropriate
polite forms. We also discussed how the play’s language reflects mid-century
American norms and explored ways to select Portuguese vocabulary that feels
slightly old-fashioned yet natural. Given the themes of manipulation and
repression, we analysed how subtle shifts in tone should be conveyed,
particularly how polite speech can mask tension and how overly courteous
dialogue contrasts with emotional breakdowns. Finally, we reviewed pronoun
choices to accurately reflect social hierarchies and character relationships in
Portuguese.

14 Março 2025, 15:30 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
We reviewed the
Pre-Translation Analysis (using the TOSTA model) of Practical 5 to focus on the
aspects of the text that needed to be maintained in the translation. We then started
reviewing students’ translations, focusing on maintaining equivalence and
addressing specific translation challenges by applying various strategies.

14 Março 2025, 11:00 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
We covered Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation methods (general) and procedures (specific), providing English-to-Portuguese examples to illustrate their practical application. We then conducted a Pre-Translation Analysis (using the TOSTA model) to focus on the aspects of the text that needed to be maintained in the translation. We then continued reviewing Practical 5 and students’ translations.
