11 Março 2025, 15:30 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

We covered Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation methods (general) and procedures (specific), providing English-to-Portuguese examples to illustrate their practical application. We then read through Practical 5 together, examining language choice and discussing ways to maintain equivalence.

Reviewing Practical 4 and Applying Strategies in Practical 5

11 Março 2025, 11:00 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

We completed the review of Practical 4, reinforcing the importance of a semantic translation approach, which required some creativity in language use. We then began reviewing Practical 5, focusing on maintaining equivalence and addressing specific translation challenges by applying various strategies.

Practical 5

7 Março 2025, 15:30 Rui Vitorino Azevedo

Students were assigned Practical 5 which included the translation of Act 2, Scene 2 of Bad Seed. Students were asked to do a pre-translation ST analysis, followed by the translation into Portuguese and a critical reflection based on Newmark’s methods and procedures. They were also asked to discuss how equivalence was maintained or how translation loss could be compensated. The first half of the scene was to be fully translated, while from page 67 onwards, only the dialogues were required.

Practical 4

We revised Practical 4, focusing on the pre-translation analysis of The Semplica Girl Diaries. Key points included maintaining the tone, irony, and fragmented style, as well as preserving the contrast between the casual tone and the disturbing themes. We discussed handling culture-bound terms and the importance of retaining the short, fragmented sentence structure with minimal restructuring. Finally, we reviewed students’ translations, emphasizing the need to preserve the source text’s stylistic features, including intentional agrammaticality.
