Sessão 9 (Folhetim de saúde)

No decorrer da aula foram reproduzidas duas gravações realizadas em casa por dois alunos e que retratam, retrospectivamente, o processo de tradução de inglês para português (de um folhetim a distribuir numa clínica de saúde, com aprox. 200 palavras). Estes registos foram comparados com uma gravação que retrata o processo de tradução do mesmo texto por um tradutor profissional. O exercício constituiu uma boa oportunidade para alertar os alunos para questões como (a) as diferentes etapas do processo de tradução (e.g. análise prévia, tradução propriamente dita + consulta de fontes, revisão, cf. Mossop 2002/2014), (b) as diferentes etapas do processo de (auto-)revisão, (c) as vantagens e desvantagens da utilização de memórias de tradução e (d) os diferentes estilos de tradução (cf. Mossop 2002/2014)
Menus, Recipes and Food

Analysis of only some of the difficulties involved in translating text involving food. Showing of a menu from an exclusive restaurant in Selfridges of London, in which the difficulty would be that of knowing what the food involved actually was (buckwheat grouts, chia jam, cultured ketchup and mung beans, for example) and from a fast food chain in the USA, involving a typical "Haddock" dinner.
Explanation that, in a translation of a novel, when a character eats haddock and french fries we may happily translate this as "peixe frito", "filetes e batatas", "peixe e batatas" as long as this information is not important or vital to the plot or storyline, or to the description of the nature of the character.
But in a menu it is important for the reader to know what is on the menu exactly -- other wise they wouldn't exist in any language -- and menus have become elements of stylistic writing recently in order to accompany the increasingly stylish preparation of food in many meal-providing retail outlets.
Demonstration that knowledge of what food is changes over time. While today's 20-year-old university student knows what goji berries are this was not the case twenty years ago and is not the case for many people over 50 in Portugal today. The same goes for hamburger, pizza and even such everyday items (now) as kiwi fruits. When, therefore, should we use italics to indicate that we think the reader might not know what the product is?

Sessão 8 (Apresentações)

Foram discutidas duas apresentações realizadas pelos estudantes, uma sobre o portal ProZ e a outra sobre o documento intitulado "UNESCO's Recommendation on the Legal Protection of Translators". Estas apresentações proporcionaram um ponto de partida para a discussão das questões relacionadas com a ética da tradução, as condições de trabalho tradutório e sobre as competências que um tradutor profissional deve possuir.
Sessão 7 (Títulos de filmes II)

A aula iniciou-se com a discussão do trabalho de casa (que consistiu na análise e produção de traduções alternativas dos títulos de filmes em língua inglesa). Seguidamente, foram discutidas duas apresentações realizadas pelos estudantes, uma sobre o perfil preferencial dos tradutores na UE e a outra sobre o portal IATE. A discussão recaiu sobre a análise das diferentes competências tradutórias e a utilidade das ferramentas tradutórias seleccionadas.

Demonstration of situations in which different approaches may be adopted in order to "translate" elements of the Imperial System of measurement and the different currency units from one language to another, depending on the relative importance of these elements within the context of the narrative or report.
