“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
Both colonizer and the colonize must come to terms with the stories.
Rudyard Kipling, “All the people like us are We and everyone else is They.” (“The White Man’s Burden”: people as “half devil and half child)
Orientalism: “Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient.” (Said)

Hybridity, cultural diference, ambivalence, and the Third Space. Homi Bamba

28 Novembro 2022, 09:30 Zuzanna Zarebska

Hybridity by Homi Bhabha: a mutual interdependence between the colonizer and the colonized (The Third Space of Enunciation), the empowering hybridity where the cultural difference operates as opposed to the disempowering exoticism that functions as the binary of myself/other
Hybridization takes many forms: linguistic, cultural, political, racial, etc. Linguistic examples include pidgin and creole
interdependence and the mutual construction
It is significant that the productive capacities of this Third Space have a colonial or postcolonial provenance. For a willingness to descend into that alien territory . . . may open the way to conceptualizing an international culture, based not on the exoticism of multiculturalism or the diversity of cultures, but on the inscription and articulation of culture’s hybridity. (Bhabha 1994: 38)
