During this second class about Geertz' "Deep play: some notes on the Balinese cockfight", we continued our analysis of the essay. We considered the following topics in particular:

- Bentham's notion of deep play that Geertz uses for the interpretation of the social meaning of bets during the cockfights.

- The idea of meta-social commentary.

- The analysis and application in our cultural context of Geertz' remark about how every culture finds its way of directing its own violence.

- The theatrical nature of the cockfight, seen as the dramatization of social structures and dynamics.

- Further differences between Geertz' empirical approach and Lévi-Strauss' interest in cultural phenomena as the manifestation of universal structures.
