T.S. Eliot, "The Class and the Elite"

Today, we continued our discussion of Eliot's excerpts from Notes Towards the Definition of Culture. After a brief summary of the main points touched on Monday (civilization vs. culture, low vs. high culture, political conservatism associated with Eliot's vision of culture, the three conditions for culture according to him), we reflected on the three senses of culture listed and analyzed by Eliot as part of an organic view of culture itself. We also talked about the risks the author sees in the excessive specialization of culture, for instance ideas of decay and disintegration. Furthermore, we connected these ideas to Eliot's vision of a purely meritocratic society, where the transmission of culture would be compromised. Finally, we reflected on Eliot's conceptualization of the relationship between culture and religion (idea of incarnation) as testifying to a Eurocentric perspective, especially in relation to Spivak's analysis of the West as Subject (Week 2).
