End of "Orientalism" / Introduction to Augé's "Non-places"

During the first part of the class, we discussed the last section of Said's introduction, where the author recognizes the importance of his own position within the debate over Arab and Muslim culture in the Western world, and shares his experience in this sense. We also mentioned the reception of Said's book as well as his responses to it, and the limits and the contradictions that Said's argument is likely to encounter.

In the second part of the class, we started to discuss the notion of non-place by looking at Augé's "Prologue", assigned as a reading for today.
